What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, dilated surface veins caused by malfunctioning valves within the venous system.

When these valves weaken or fail, blood flows backward instead of returning efficiently toward the heart. This creates pressure within the vein, causing it to stretch, twist, and become visibly raised beneath the skin.

Varicose veins may:

  • Appear rope-like or bulging
  • Cause heaviness or aching in the legs
  • Lead to swelling or fatigue
  • Produce throbbing or restless sensations
  • Increase the risk of future venous complications

Venous disease exists along a spectrum, from small spider veins to large varicosities, but the underlying mechanism is the same: valve dysfunction.

Once varicose veins develop, they do not resolve on their own. Proper evaluation is essential before treatment.

Treatment
& Technology

Effective vein treatment begins with identifying the source of venous dysfunction.

At Advanced Hair & Skin Surgery, evaluation may include a detailed medical history, physical examination, and duplex ultrasound imaging when indicated.

Ultrasound assessment allows us to determine whether deeper veins are contributing to the condition, identify abnormal backward flow (venous reflux), rule out clotting concerns, and establish the correct treatment sequence.

Treating the right vein first is critical to achieving lasting results.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

For deeper feeding veins, duplex ultrasound allows precise visualization and targeted treatment without surgical incisions.

This minimally invasive procedure:

  • Uses local anesthetic only
  • Typically takes about 30 minutes
  • Treats veins up to approximately seven mm in diameter
  • Closes problematic vessels internally

Ultrasound guidance improves both accuracy and safety while avoiding traditional vein stripping surgery.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy remains the gold standard for treating smaller varicose veins and associated spider veins. A medical solution is injected directly into the vein, causing the vessel walls to seal and gradually fade as the body reabsorbs it over one to two weeks. Treatment is performed in-office, requires no incisions, and has an extensive long-term safety record.

Treated Areas

Varicose vein treatment may be recommended for:

Legs
Calves
Thighs
Areas affected by enlarged or symptomatic varicose veins

Treatment recommendations are based on the location of the affected veins, symptom severity, and your overall vascular health.

What to expect

Your vein consultation includes review of symptoms and medical history, physical examination, and duplex ultrasound when necessary.

We determine whether visible veins are the primary concern or whether deeper veins require treatment first. A clear diagnosis allows for safer and more effective care.

You will leave with a clear understanding of your condition and treatment options.

Treatment experience depends on the selected approach.

Sclerotherapy involves tiny injections into targeted veins and typically takes 15–30 minutes with only mild discomfort.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses real-time imaging to treat deeper vessels under local anesthetic and generally takes about 30 minutes.

Patients leave wearing compression stockings and usually return to normal activities the same day.

Compression stockings are worn as directed to support circulation and optimize healing.

Treated veins gradually close and fade over several weeks as the body naturally absorbs them.

Follow up appointments monitor progress and determine whether additional sessions are beneficial.

Since venous disease can progress over time, early treatment often improves long-term outcomes.

Most procedures involve minimal discomfort and require only local anesthetic.

Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Treated veins do not return, but new veins may develop over time due to underlying venous disease.

Some patients benefit from staged treatments depending on severity.

What Can Varicose Vein Treatment Improve?

Bulging leg veins, heaviness, aching, swelling, restless sensations, cosmetic concerns, and progressive venous disease.
